Pond District Plothen
Land of a thousand ponds.
Several hundred ponds, surrounded by forests, meadows and fields date back to the Middle Ages, when monks constructed them for fish farming. They are also important habitat for a diverse flora and fauna.
Birds, such as coots, eagles, diving ducks and many songbirds can be observed easily. The area is also an important stop-over for migratory birds.
Ulilizing the existing clay layer, monks created the ponds and waited for the rain to fill them. Fishing, with its long history, continues until today.
The buildings in the ponds was once used to store fish nutrition - it is now an information centre.
