Lakes Hohenwarte and Bleiloch, both created by daming Saale river, are also referred to as "Thuringian Sea".
Along the river forests, water and rocks combine to form new images over and over again. Attracted by this, visitors come from far away, enjoying well-marked trails, scenic vistas and several campgrounds.
You find the "Stony Rose", a geologic curiosity near Saalburg.
In some regions Saale river still takes its natural course and flows through mountains like a blue ribbon. Open rocks with a dry and warm climate provide suitable environment for specialized species.
